TELL ME MORE ABOUT THE ROLE? The work of the Environment & Resource Management team includes strategic and operational responsibility for our client in the agri-environment and resource management areas, including:
- Agricultural resource management covering soils management, soil biology and health, crop nutrient management, water use in agriculture and the adoption of precision technologies to improve production efficiency
- Environmental management associated with animal housing
- Gaseous emissions
- Agricultural waste management
- The maintenance / enhancement of farm biodiversity
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Providing technical and strategic leadership to the Environment and Resource Management Team, ensuring scientific expertise and excellence is maintained and enhanced. There is a particular emphasis on helping the industry achieve and manage environmental best practice and compliance
- Directing and developing activity in the agri-environment area, including environmental management associated with animal housing, gaseous emissions, agricultural waste management and the maintenance / enhancement of farm biodiversity
- You will need to take an overview of work related to agricultural resource management, covering soils management, soil biology and health, crop nutrient management, water use in agriculture, and the adoption of precision technologies to improve production efficiency
- Providing operational and line management leadership of all staff within the team, including direct line management of senior staff. You will control and monitor the operational budget for the team, and liaise with the Finance Business
- Partner to ensure accurate financial forecasting and provide appropriate reporting information to the Research Director
- Develop and sustain close relationships with the Knowledge Exchange and Marketing & Communications teams to enhance delivery and obtain value
- Working with the Research Director, and Sector Strategy Directors to ensure the correct level of expertise and resource
- You will be the first point of contact with external stakeholders for matters relating to the Environment Team’s areas of expertise, developing international links with other organisations to ensure that that the technical expertise of the team is consistent with international knowledge and standards
WHAT QUALITIES DO I NEED?
- Relevant degree or higher degree in biological, agricultural, agri-environmental or related discipline
- Extensive relevant experience of technical, research and policy issues relating to agri-environmental management associated with animal housing, gaseous emissions, agricultural waste management and the maintenance/enhancement of farm biodiversity
- Good working knowledge of work related to agricultural resource management, covering soils management, soil biology and health, crop nutrient management, water use in agriculture, and the adoption of precision technologies to improve production efficiency
- Particular knowledge of the technical issues and applied research needs for the Potatoes sector is desirable but not essential
- Excellent knowledge of the UK research funding landscape
- Experience of managing significant budgets
- Knowledge of international research relevant to the team remit
- Skills and experience of managing and motivating technical teams
- Experience and an understanding of working with government agencies and commercial organisations to develop business opportunities
- Excellent communication skills
