“A senior leadership role to develop a sustainable future for the National Trust’s 90 Lake District farms at a time of unprecedented change”
This will involve leading a diverse team in a complex and sensitive environment to deliver a significant capital programme, develop new financially sustainable business models for our farms and investing in our farmers – the current and next generations - to face into the challenges ahead. Key outputs will include the recovery of species and habitats and a landscape that is more robust in the face of climate change, all the while sustaining the globally significant attributes that make the Lake District a World Heritage Site – its upland farming practices and native breeds. At the heart of all of this will be financially stable and viable farms.

What you'll be doing
You will be part of the One Lakes Leadership Team which provides the operational and strategic leadership for all our work in the Lake District.
You will be managing our team of Estate Managers – qualified and experienced rural surveyors responsible for our let estate, our Farming Officer and a dedicated Project Manager. You will provide the leadership necessary to bring this team together to deliver the changes we are seeking – a new approach to farming that will deliver our wider conservation benefits for both the natural and cultural landscape, through financially sustainable farming businesses.
You will support the wider National Trust Lake District team to build stronger relationships with all our farmers, including new entrants, strengthening our reputation as a champion for farming that delivers benefits for people and nature. By sharing the outcomes from this programme with our partners in the Lake District and across the Trust, you will ensure that the benefits and the key learnings are well understood across the Trust’s UK landholdings and beyond our boundaries.
Who we're looking for
You'll be passionate about the role the National Trust can play in building a nature-rich and culture-rich landscape in the Lake District. You'll have strong knowledge and experience of, and/or relevant qualifications in, Farming, the Environment, Wildlife, Social Science and/or Agricultural economics. You'll be able to demonstrate extensive experience and knowledge of farming - especially in the uplands - combined with an understanding of the Trust's purposes of conservation and access for all.
You will be highly credible with our wider farming community – you’ll be a champion of the significance of our farms as a conservation asset at the heart of the English Lake District World Heritage Site and you will understand the important role of farmers in this.
You will be the voice and advocate for farming in the National Trust One Lakes Leadership Team.
You will be charismatic – you’ll be the Trust’s spokesperson on farming in the Lakes.
Salary is in the range of £52,000 to £60,000

The assessment centre will be held in Grasmere on 11th October with an evening meal and discussion on the prior evening of 10th October.
