About NFU Mutual and our agency network

As a successful, growing insurance and financial services company with an award-winning range of products and services, we serve a range of customers, from individual policyholders to major businesses. We’re a mutual, which means our customers are also our members and we develop long-standing relationships with them, based on exceptional personal service and honest advice. This means we really know our market and retain 95% of business each year. As one of our Agents, you’ll be able to run and develop your business from a position of real strength.

Our Newton Abbot Agency is highly respected in the local business community and offers an attractive mix of commercial and agricultural business. You will be working with the Senior Agent and together develop and manage your own insurance sales business, selling and introducing a wide range of insurance and financial products. With a focus on mid and large corporate clients and High Net Worth within a highly supportive, loyal and active NFU branch in the agricultural market, you’ll find plenty of potential to increase sales. There is great potential for business growth particularly in the commercial space – you and the Senior Agent will work together promoting NFU Mutuals’ products and services to this market whilst also maintaining a top class service for existing customers.

Your opportunity as an NFU Mutual Agent & NFU Group Secretary

We’re looking for business leaders, rather than insurance specialists, although knowledge of insurance or finance would be useful. As an Agent, you’ll be your own boss, running an agency under NFU Mutual's name, selling our award-winning products and services. You’ll have the freedom to develop plans and strategies, recruit a team and expand your ambitions. It’s a chance to use your entrepreneurial flair to grow a business with a full range of customers, from farmers to homeowners, commercial businesses to car owners.

This means you’ll need a combination of personal and professional qualities. You’ll be an excellent communicator, great with people from a wide range of backgrounds, with the ability to spot a sales opportunity and develop new business. With an entrepreneurial attitude and a clear vision, you’ll be commercially sharp and open to innovations to continually improve your agency.

As well as being a strong and influential business leader, you’ll also be an inspirational and motivational manager to your team. Collaborative, positive and supportive, you’ll give them opportunities to develop their talents, while making sure they work to all relevant regulations and standards of compliance.

You’ll also play a major role in the farming community as your area’s NFU Group Secretary. NFU represent the voice of agriculture up to the highest levels. You’ll play a major role in this, championing local farmers’ interests, arranging local meetings and events, recruiting and retaining members and keeping them up-to-date on union policy. This will put you at the heart of the local rural community, giving you the chance to make the most of new business opportunities for your Agency. With full backing from the union, you’ll have access to expert advice and specialist support on everything from policy and increasing membership to marketing and media.

Rewards and benefits

You’ll be taking over an established business, so won’t need to make any up-front capital investment and as a self-employed Agent, your income will be incorporated within the business financials. You’ll have the freedom to grow your business; to recruit, reward and develop your staff; and to lead with the autonomy of an entrepreneur, all with the backing of a major organisation. As well as investment support, we’ll give you access to a full range of courses at our dedicated Training Academy, such as sales, business and finance planning, team recruitment and NFU Mutual products. We’ll also support you in gaining Chartered Institute of Insurers certification.

Before you register your interest in becoming an Agent with NFU Mutual, please ask yourself the following questions.

  • Do you have a passion for customer service?
  • Do you enjoy interacting with people, building networks and playing an active role in the community?

If the answers to these are yes, then we are looking forward to hearing from you.
