The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) is seeking applications for a new advisory group, the Bovine Tuberculosis (bTB) Partnership. The group will be a driving force for further progress with Defra's bTB strategy, which aims to secure Officially bTB Free status for England by 2038.

BTB is one of the most pressing animal health problems in England. Measures to tackle the disease are costly and represent a major source of distress for hard-working farmers and rural communities. It is critical that government, the farming industry and other interested stakeholders rise to this urgent challenge together.

The Partnership will be instrumental in driving forward the next phase of the bTB strategy, playing a key role in setting strategic direction, codesigning potential new policies, and developing our communication and engagement strategy. The Partnership will provide support, advice and constructive challenge to Defra's Ministers and officials and will act as a focal point for communication and co-ordination.

The Partnership will be jointly chaired by Defra and an independent member. John Cross has been appointed by Ministers as the independent Chair having led the bTB Eradication Advisory Group (TBEAG) since 2012. John is a well-respected farmer from Norfolk with a long history of involvement in the livestock sector and is currently also Chair of Livestock Information Ltd.

Person specification

We are particularly interested in applications that demonstrate extensive knowledge and expertise in one or more of the following fields:

  • Farming industry, particularly the cattle sector across all bTB geographical risk areas in England,
  • The private veterinary profession,
  • Local authority enforcement, with knowledge of regulatory and enforcement issues,
  • Academia/science relevant to animal health/ bTB,
  • Wider supply chain, including retailers and processors able to apply their knowledge of supply chain issues,
  • Relevant conservation issues.

Partnership members will be appointed for their personal knowledge and expertise and must be able to contribute effectively to deliberations, offer constructive challenge and communicate effectively with other stakeholders. Further details on the selection criteria are included in a briefing pack (see How to apply).

Remuneration will be paid, along with reasonable travel and subsistence costs. The appointments will be for a term of up to three years and subject to conditions set out in a contract to be shared with successful candidates.

Defra is committed to improving the diversity of its public appointments and welcomes applications from women and under-represented groups, including individuals from Black and Ethnic communities; and disabled people, for whom we offer a Guaranteed Interview Scheme.

These appointments will be governed by the principle of public appointments based on merit, with independent assessment and transparency of process.

How to apply

Full details of the application process and selection criteria can be found in the briefing pack and should be used when drafting applications.
