BACKGROUND

Garnstone Farms is a progressive Family Partnership which operates near Weobley in north west Herefordshire.

FARMING

Of the 1200ha farmed in-hand, 1000ha is arable with the remainder being permanent grass which helps support a relatively new 750 head beef unit.

The soils are predominantly grade 1 & 2 and the arable cropping is diverse and includes wheat, oilseed rape, herbage seed, fescue, clover, oats (AD Plant), maize and linseed, with further land let for tenderstem broccoli and for silage for a nearby dairy unit.

There are also Mid Tier and Higher Level Stewardship Schemes in operation.

The farm has been at the forefront of developing sustainable and regenerative farming methods and is looking to develop this further through the current transition in the Farming industry.

ASSOCIATED ENTERPRISES

In addition to the in-hand farm detailed above, the Partnership is involved in an AD Plant, and has a Broiler Breeder unit, Let Land and Property and 260ha of forestry.

THE POSITION

This exciting position has arisen due to the impending retirement after 32 years of the current manager who has led the business in its adoption of sustainable farming techniques over the last 9 years.

It is anticipated that the role has the potential for further career progression in the future.

THE CANDIDATE

We are looking for someone to continue this good work and develop both the arable enterprise and the wider business going forward.

The successful applicant will be directly responsible for the day-to-day management of the arable unit and duties will include:

  • Agreeing policy, investment, budgets and cropping.
  • Sales and purchase of crops, inputs, machinery and equipment,.
  • Day to day organisation of staff and contractors.
  • Liaison with other parts of the business.
  • Maintenance and service of equipment.
  • Agronomy and field records.
  • BPS, Stewardship and Mid Tier management/applications.
  • Oversight of Red Tractor and other Assurance Schemes.
  • Health and Safety.
  • Farm walks, education and community engagement.
  • Research into new ideas and markets.

Regular input will also be required into the management of 750 head beef enterprise as well as some assistance with the associated enterprises mentioned above.

The ideal candidate will be a team player, have sound people skills, good technical skills and be attuned to improving soil health and carbon capture.

They will be supported by a modern office and will join an open minded and friendly management/admin team.
