Location: Chester, UK

Who are we?

We are United Utilities, the North West’s Water and Wastewater Company. It’s our job to bring 3.2 million households and thousands of businesses an incredible 2,000 million litres of clean, clear water each day. We take it all away too, treating it so it’s safe to go back into the rivers.

Alongside owning and operating the water and wastewater network in North West England, United Utilities is one of the largest landowners in the region with a 57,000 ha rural estate of prime catchment land.

Our employees and managers are key to achieving our ambitious vision and providing a great service to our customers.  So we’ll invest in you to help equip you with the skills you need to deliver great performance.

This is where you come in?

We have a fantastic opportunity for 2 full time Catchment Advisors to join our South Area Catchment Team, the roles are permanent and based at Huntington Water Treatment Works, Huntington, Chester.

The roles will focus on catchment management covering Cheshire, Warrington, Wirral, parts of Derbyshire and Shropshire as well as the River Dee into North Wales and Lake Vyrnwy in North East Wales. The 2 roles available will ideally cover slightly different technical skills; one will focus on GIS and the other will take a focus on Hydrogeology. Both require a background in and proven experience of working in the agricultural sector and sustainable agricultural practices.

This is a key role to the business to improve and protect raw water quality and quantity in both our ground and surface drinking water sources. You will be responsible for delivering, monitoring and reporting on catchment-specific advice and projects.

What will you focus on?

You will use your knowledge of diffuse pollution issues and catchment management to deliver new and existing innovative schemes and interventions to improve water quality.  You will monitor, carry out investigations and report on potential polluting events and activities.  Using your excellent communication skills you will provide advice on protecting water quality to farmers, land managers and other stakeholders.

Your excellent organisation and presentation skills will enable you to manage and deliver farmer and steering group meetings and represent United Utilities in local stakeholder groups.  You will need to be positive and proactive to work with a variety of stakeholders internally and externally and have the ability to actively manage and prioritise your workload working outside on farm and catchment as well as in the office

What do you need?

You will be approachable and engaging with a qualification in Agriculture, Agronomy, Land and Water Management, Catchment Management, Hydrogeology, GIS or Environmental Science. Your great negotiation and project management skills will be vital in this role, along with attention to detail. You will need to have a good understanding of water company drivers for catchment management and their diverse and complex delivery mechanisms. Excellent organisational, communication and team working skills are required as you’ll be dealing professionally with internal and external bodies and third parties across all levels. Given the nature of this role we need you to be flexible and travel around the South Catchment Team Area so a full driving licence and car are essential.
