Severn Trent Water has committed to an ambitious drinking water catchment management programme to be delivered over the next five years, with the aim of improving drinking water quality while avoiding investment in new water treatment processes.

To be able to deliver on this promise and more, we are looking for an ambitious Agricultural Advisor Team Manager to lead a strong and experienced team of Agricultural Advisors who will ensure the delivery of our catchment schemes and Successful Catchment Management ODI (outcome delivery incentive). In this role, you will be responsible for supervising and managing a team of 7 advisors, while also having the chance to still get out and speak to and influence our stakeholders.

You will be working with Water UK, DWI, Defra and other regulators to influence national policy around drinking water protection measures, Water Framework Directive implementation and be the interface between the water and agricultural sectors.

You will also be responsible either for farmer engagement activities such as one to one farmer meetings, water quality sampling and running farmer events in the Teme catchment.

We will be looking for you to push the boundaries of agriculture in the Severn Trent region for the betterment of our environment and have the opportunities to design and develop schemes which you and the team will deliver to our agriculture community.

Let’s talk about the key accountabilities of the position.

  • Management of day to day Agricultural Advisor and third party performance for 1-2-1 farm advise quality, ODI reporting and customer satisfaction
  • Technically advise the business on agricultural issues
  • Provide technical review and guidance for catchment management activities
  • Develop and support staff to ensure the team is achieving successful results and customers are receiving excellent customer service
  • Build good relationships with NGO’s, the Environment Agency, Catchment Sensitive Farming, the farming community and other interested stakeholders to develop collaborative and efficient solutions to local water quality risks
  • Support on research and development opportunities exploring innovative ways to manage new and ongoing water quality issues both within STW and as part of cross water company research projects.

The skills and experience required to be successful include…

With this role being such an important part of Severn Trent’s environmental offering we are looking for you to have a proven track record in land management, soil science, water quality, hydrology or hydrogeology and have the ability to demonstrate your understanding and implementation of practical solutions to issues in these areas. We would be looking for you to also have the ability to engage with and build strong working relationships with the farming community and other interest groups and stakeholders.

You will be heading up a strong existing team of advisors so the experience of leading teams, especially in an environmental capacity will hold you in very good stead for this position. Alongside this, experience in driving people to deliver personal, team and company objectives as well as an ability to tackle demanding tasks will be key. Being able to couple this with a good knowledge of Catchment Team processes with understanding of why decisions are being made and the ability to explain this will elevate your application.


To Succeed in the role we’re looking for you to be qualified in an environmental field. Catchment science, environmental sciences or environmental management would be ideal, but if you have qualifications in Agriculture or Land management this will also be great, again we’d be looking for it to be ideally at MSc level. We will be looking for you to be able to demonstrate significant capability in technical leadership, certainly around catchment management and environmental projects and have an understanding of agricultural and environmental regulations and legislation. As this role will be going out and meeting with different stakeholders and your team we will like you to have a Full UK Driving Licence.

It would also be desirable for you to be FACTS / BASIS qualified and working towards Chartered Scientist (CSci) and/or Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv) status. If you already have understanding of the water industry, the periodic review process and the statutory Water Resources Management Planning process this would be great.

  • Base salary of between £40,000 to £50,000
