AGRONOMIST (South West Region)

Based in Cambridge, with a major site in Kent and field trials centres across England, NIAB has unique capabilities and expertise, delivering high quality research, statutory and commercial services, and helping UK agriculture and horticulture to remain productive and resilient. Key activities include crop genetics and breeding, variety evaluation, farming systems and soils, applied pathology, and agronomy, across arable, horticultural and forage crops.

We have an immediate vacancy for a suitably qualified arable Agronomist in South West England. The postholder for this prominent role will be responsible for delivering technical information to farmer, agronomist and corporate NIAB TAG Members, especially in Cornwall, Devon and Somerset, as part of the Regional Agronomy team, and supported by NIAB’s extensive independent trials capability and team of specialists.

Specifically, we are seeking a combinable crop agronomist to deliver verbal, written and digital agronomy information, one-to-group technical meetings, events and one-to-one telephone support. The postholder will support other agronomy team members with service delivery in the west and south of England, and the role will extend to providing on-farm agronomy advice to regional farmer clients.

Applicants are likely to have a degree or equivalent in Agriculture or a related subject. Formal agronomy training and BASIS Crop Protection / FACTS qualifications are essential, with at least 2 years of experience in combinable crop agronomy (research, trials or advice) in the UK. Direct experience in on-farm agronomy advice is desirable but not essential as further training can be provided. Good IT and communication skills, a full driving licence and willingness to travel by road throughout southern/western England are vital. Applicants should be able to work independently, accurately and proactively but also operate within a national team. Additional knowledge of trials design and interpretation would be beneficial.

The remuneration package includes earning potential that reflect the skills and experience of the appointee (anticipated starting salary in the range £35,000 - £45,000 per annum), pension and other employment benefits, and car allowance.
