Job Description - Shepherd
Summary of the role:
- You will be fully responsible for the day-to-day management of the Sheep Enterprise at Overbury. At present this is 1,000 outdoor lambing ewes within Grade 2 Parkland and on short term herbal leys, reporting directly to the Farm Manager
- Lambs produced are primarily sold dead weight either to the May Hill Lamb Group and directly to a local farm shop. The lambs are finished on grass, cover-crops and stubble turnips
- As the key member of the sheep management team, you will be involved in setting objectives for the direction and performance of the flock and your personal development
Tasks and Responsibilities:
- Ensuring the welfare and safety of the livestock to LEAF Marque assurance standards including all relevant livestock procedures, grassland management and electric fencing
- Working closely with our vet to monitor and develop dynamic animal health plans and maintaining the necessary accurate records
- Livestock records including movement records
- Using Agriwebb software for legal compliance and flock management purposes
- Helping the farm team with fencing and maintenance duties
- Some Estate maintenance including quad and sheep buildings
- Be fully compliant with all Health and Safety requirements as stated within the Farm’s Health and Safety Policy
- Supervision of Lambing assistants and share in the mentoring of a placement student
Skills and Knowledge:
- Highly developed livestock skills and substantial experience, especially around outdoor lambing
- Own dogs essential
- Driving and trailer license
- Ability to operate individually and within a team at certain times
- Establish and develop close working relationships with a wider Estate team
- Look for opportunities to improve and develop the sheep enterprise

- Flexible and adaptable approach to working with in a wider business
- Honest, reliable and committed
- Friendly and approachable to members of the general public and guest on farm open days
- A self-motivated team player demonstrating the core values of the Estate, friendly, respectful and polite
