The Torry Hill Estate is a 3000 acre family owned estate in the North Kent Downs AONB, which includes an impressive herd of approximately 40 traditional pedigree Sussex cattle, a forestry business, commercial stone fruit orchards, and arable enterprise.
A herd manager is now required to manage the cattle which comprise the largest herd of traditional pedigree Sussex in the country.
The Role

Management of the herd, plus youngstock and bulls, to include herd health, supervising the breeding programme, and feeding, bedding, calving and general husbandry, and supervising sales of youngstock

General enterprise management including organising hay making and straw baling with contractors as required, and planning grazing rotations

Managing regulatory compliance relating to routine testing, application of medicines etc and cattle identification documents, in conjunction with the Estate Administrator.

Involvement in other aspects of the life of the estate as required, in conjunction with the wider team.
The individual will report to the estate owner, who is a full-time working manager of the estate, and will work within a team including an estate mechanic, maintenance employee, and administrator.
The Individual
We are looking to recruit an experienced and enthusiastic individual with the following particular attributes:

Proven experience in cattle husbandry, management and health including calving and livestock administration.

An energetic and self- motivated outlook, with an aptitude for problem solving and collaborative working.

An ability to work independently, and within a team

Good organisational skills

Proficiency and qualifications in operating routine agricultural machinery, including a telehandler and tractors, and in towing trailers

A practical ability to manage and repair equipment, fencing, water pipes etc.

Competence in relevant health and safety legislation applicable to the role

Full driving licence (with categories C and K)

Daily working hours are a minimum of 8 am to 5 pm but variable depending on the demands of the role, and will include out of hours duties for calving and other aspects, within a fixed salary.
