Farm Manager Game Birds Pheasants Partridges Livestock Management Warwickshire

Heart of England Farms Ltd based in Warwickshire are one of the country's leading game bird farms, producing high numbers of pheasants, both redleg and grey partridges and mallard chicks and poults. Our extensive breeding flocks are supplemented each year from chicks produced and hatched on site, reared through the summer months they are then over wintered ready for the following laying season. We have two state of the art hatcheries, one recently completed in February 2021, allowing to us to be one of the leading suppliers of British produced game birds. Our rearing programme to produce strong, healthy, well feathered poults for delivering to customers is tried and tested.

We are currently seeking an experienced individual to join our team working within Game Bird Management. Initially this role will involve 12 months of learning about our business, seeing how the seasons evolve and working alongside our current teams.  Long term it would be expected that this individual takes on more and more direct responsibility and decision making.  Being the first point of contact for staff and liaising with management on short, medium and long term projects that need achieving.

Initially you will have direct responsibility for specific breeds of pheasant laying flocks including vaccination programs, taking them from their winter quarters in the new year to the laying pens and maintaining the welfare during the laying season. Managing egg collecting and working to always improve egg quality and quantity. Managing automatic feed systems, liaising with the office on bird feed ordering.  Working on new trial projects looking at improving egg production and reducing egg collecting labour.

Depending on your experience this role could include the responsibility of rearing of day olds, whether that be pheasants, partridges or mallard. Alternatively our system of rearing dictates that birds are moved out to the fields at bitting age and this position could therefore be involved in rearing from this age.

Requirements for the role:- previous farm management experience, not necessarily a game farm.  Prior experience in the management of game birds or poultry or potentially other livestock, a minimum of 3 years in a commercial environment at this level. Able to demonstrate specific numbers of birds/animals reared and techniques used, improvements made, lessons learnt. Prior knowledge of breeding birds would be hugely beneficial. Time management, organisation and working in a clean and tidy way are strong characteristics that we are seeking.

The role offered attracts a 40 hour (Mon – Fri) working week permanent contract however the hours worked will easily average between 50-55 inc weekends. Weekend work will be either a Saturday or a Sunday (Not both). Normal hours are 7:30am - 4:30pm with these hours increasing from the Spring as the laying season starts. Salary is to be discussed at meeting and is paid by the hour.

We can assist with accommodation if required and again can be discussed and form part of the package offered.
