Farm Board Member

Role: Farm Board Member (External)
Time Commitment: Up to 4 days per annum (Attendance at quarterly meetings and preparation)
Term: 5 years, renewable once
Remuneration: Expenses

About the Role: Newcastle University is seeking dedicated and knowledgeable individuals to join our Farm Board as External Members. The University's farm plays a pivotal role in our teaching and research initiatives, operating commercially while supporting educational activities. As an External Farm Board Member, you will provide invaluable insights and guidance to enhance our farm's performance and strategic direction.

Key Responsibilities:

• Attend and actively participate in quarterly Farm Board meetings.

• Review reports and papers, identifying any significant deviations from strategic plans.

• Ensure the Farm Board is informed about changes in farming legislation and new industry challenges or opportunities.

• Support and advise the Farm Board and Farms Director on industry engagement and current trends in UK Agriculture.

• Advocate for best farming practices and assist non-farming members in understanding farm operations.

• Provide an independent perspective on farm activities and communicate your insights to the Farm Board and Farms Director.

• Represent and advocate for the University’s farm within the industry and beyond.

Person Specification: We are looking for individuals who can demonstrate:

• A broad working knowledge of farming, farm management, enterprise management, or the operations of farming and academic institutions.

• Strategic and critical thinking abilities.

• An understanding of the challenges facing UK Agriculture and how academic institutions can support the sector.

• Strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively within a diverse group.

• Credibility and respect among peers in the farming or academic community.
